Im letzten dreiviertel Jahr machte ich – was diesen Blog betrifft – eine sch\u00f6pferische Pause. Was aber nicht bedeutet, dass bei unserer pepperbird<\/em> nichts weiter gegangen w\u00e4re. Von einer Arbeitswoche an Land im Juli und einem fast dreiw\u00f6chigen Urlaub im Herbst sollen auf den n\u00e4chsten Beitr\u00e4gen berichtet werden. Nachdem wir die pepperbird<\/em> nun seit mehr als einem Jahr besitzen, wenn ich auch nur f\u00fcr sechs Wochen an Bord sein konnte, haben wir auf zwei \u201eT\u00f6rns\u201c Gelegenheit, ihre Vorz\u00fcge kennen zu lernen. Als \u201eNebenwirkung\u201c haben wir Ende April 2021 auch eine lange Job-Liste.<\/p>

Aber nicht nur die Aufgaben, die uns schon vom Gutachten und von der \u00dcberfahrt \u00fcber die Nordsee her bekannt waren, kommen auf die Liste (Anti-Fouling, Tank, Landstrom, Fensterdichtungen vorne etc.). Immerhin haben wir inzwischen den Motor \u00fcberholen und ein neues Schaltpaneel f\u00fcr die Maschine einbauen lassen. Im Fr\u00fchjahr sind aber neue Schwierigkeiten aufgetaucht: Auch die Salonfenster sind nicht ganz dicht und an den Decksbeschl\u00e4gen am Dach der Hauptkabine treten einige undichte Stellen zutage. Das erfordert eine recht rasche Intervention. Da sich also gezeigt hat, dass die Liste im Lauf eines \u201eUrlaubs-T\u00f6rns\u201c eher l\u00e4nger als k\u00fcrzer wird, muss dringend etwas geschehen.<\/p>

Als bei der Urlaubseinteilung in meinem Team pl\u00f6tzlich eine freie Woche Mitte Juli zum Vorschein kommt und nachdem Matthias im Fr\u00fchjahr Corona-bedingt abgesagt hat, frage ich ihn, ob er sich auch eine landgest\u00fctzte Woche an Bord der pepperbird<\/em> vorstellen k\u00f6nne, in der wir in einem Hotel wohnen und die Tage f\u00fcr notwendige Arbeiten am Boot verwenden w\u00fcrden. Wie erwartet ist er sofort davon begeistert, sowohl von der Gelegenheit, unsere kleine Yacht endlich kennenzulernen als auch von der Aussicht, eine ganze Arbeitswoche an ihr herum-basteln zu k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>

After owning the pepperbird<\/em> for more than a year now, even if I could only be on board for six weeks, we had the opportunity to get to know her advantages on two „cruises“. As a „side effect“ we also have a long job list at the end of April 2021.<\/p>

But not only the tasks that were already known to us from the survey and from the crossing of the North Sea will be on the list (anti-fouling, tank, shore power connection, window seals in the front, etc.). At least we have since had the engine overhauled and a new starter panel installed for the motor. However, new difficulties have arisen in the spring: The saloon windows are also not completely tight, and some leaks are appearing on the deck fittings on the roof of the main cabin. This requires a rather quick intervention. So, as it has become apparent that the list has become longer rather than shorter in the course of a „vacation cruise“, something urgently needs to be done.<\/p>

When a free week in mid-July suddenly comes up in my team’s vacation schedule, and after Matthias had cancelled the trip in spring due to Corona, I ask him if he could also imagine a land-based week aboard our pepperbird<\/em>, during which we would stay in a hotel and use the days for necessary work on the boat. As expected, he is immediately enthusiastic about it, both from the opportunity to finally get to know our little yacht and from the prospect of being able to spend a whole working week tinkering with her.<\/p>

Also mache ich auf der Fahrt nach Lelystad einen Abstecher zum Ammersee, treffe auch Jutta und Melina nach vielen Jahren wieder einmal und am n\u00e4chsten Morgen machen wir uns auf den Weg ans IJsselmeer. Das Hotel erweist sich als Hausboot im Hinterhof einer Autobahnstation, aber immerhin liegt es am Rand eines Naturschutzgebietes und trotz der recht einfachen Ausstattung f\u00fchlen wir uns dort sehr wohl. Die Fahrten zum und vom Boot erweisen sich als recht stressfrei, wobei zwei Baum\u00e4rkte f\u00fcr notwendige Besorgungen praktischerweise direkt am Weg liegen.
Also: An die Arbeit!
Zuerst werden alle Deckenpaneele im Salon entfernt und wir sehen, dass wir wohl am besten die Decksbeschl\u00e4ge abmontieren, das Deck ein paar Tage trocknen lassen und anschlie\u00dfend mit einem Epoxid-Pfropfen und einer Butyl-Dichtung wieder befestigen. Die Beschl\u00e4ge unter der Sprayhood und im Bereich der Toilette erweisen sich als unproblematisch, daher k\u00f6nnen wir den Aufwand ein wenig reduzieren und w\u00fcrden trotzdem ein dichtes Dach bekommen. Daf\u00fcr beschlie\u00dfen wir, dass wir eine zweite Bugklampe gleich dieses Mal montieren werden. Die zentrale Klampe am Vorderdeck ist zwar sch\u00f6n gro\u00df, aber f\u00fcr einen Liegeplatz in der Dalben-Box sind zwei Befestigungs-m\u00f6glichkeiten am Bug schon sehr praktisch.<\/p>

So, on the way to Lelystad I make a detour to the Ammersee, meet Jutta and Melina again after many years and the next morning we set off for the IJsselmeer. The hotel turns out to be a houseboat in the backyard of a highway station, but at least it is located at the edge of a nature reserve and despite the rather simple furnishings we feel very comfortable there. The trips to and from the boat prove to be quite stress-free, with two hardware stores conveniently located right along the way for necessary errands.<\/p>

So, let’s get to work!<\/p>

First, all the ceiling panels in the salon are removed, and we see that it’s probably best to remove the deck fittings, let the sandwich-structure dry for a few days, and then reattach them with an \u201cepoxy plug\u201d and butyl caulk. The fittings under the sprayhood and in the toilet-area prove to be unproblematic, so we can reduce the effort a bit and would still get a sealed roof. Therefore, we decide that we will mount a second bow cleat right away this time. The central cleat on the foredeck is nice and big, but for a mooring in the dolphin box, two fastening options on the bow are certainly very practical.<\/p>

Die Arbeit schreitet gut voran, wobei wir nat\u00fcrlich f\u00fcr alles etwas l\u00e4nger brauchen als gedacht, aber damit war zu rechnen. Bei der Entfernung der Deckenpaneele zeigt sich zum Beispiel, dass die alte Vinyl-Bespannung gar nicht mehr h\u00e4lt. Das beschert uns eine Menge l\u00e4stigen Staubs und einige Stunden zus\u00e4tzliche Arbeit, die wir f\u00fcr die notd\u00fcrftige Fixierung der alten Tapezierung brauchen. Immerhin bleibt uns das bekannt unzuverl\u00e4ssige Nordsee-Wetter gewogen \u2013 wir m\u00fcssen keine Regen bedingten Pausen einlegen.<\/p>

Als Mittagessen nehmen wir eine kalte Jause an Bord ein und am Abend gehen wir essen. Nachdem das Hotel-Restaurant nicht besonders gut ist, probieren wir ein griechisches Lokal in der Nachbarstadt Almere. Dort ist es aber so voll und es sind keinerlei Vorsichtsma\u00dfnahmen gegen Corona mehr erkennbar, dass wir beschlie\u00dfen ab sofort im wiederer\u00f6ffneten Restaurant der Marina zu speisen. Auf der luftigen Terrasse f\u00fchlen wir uns viel sicherer.<\/p>

The work is progressing well, though of course everything is taking us a little longer than calculated, but that was to be expected. Removing the ceiling panels, for example, shows that the old vinyl covering doesn’t hold at all. This gives us a lot of annoying dust and a few hours of extra work, which we need for the makeshift fixation of the old headlining. At least the notoriously unreliable North Sea weather is kind to us – we don’t have to take any rain-related breaks.<\/p>

For lunch, we have a cold snack on board and in the evening, we go out for dinner. Since the hotel restaurant is not very good, we try a Greek restaurant in the neighbouring town of Almere. There, however, it is so crowded and no precautions against Corona are visible any more that we decide to dine in the reopened restaurant of the marina from now on. On the airy terrace we feel much safer.<\/p>

Als wir uns nach f\u00fcnf vollen Arbeitstagen wieder auf den R\u00fcckweg machen, ist einiges erledigt: Das neue Antifouling ist aufgetragen, die Decksbeschl\u00e4ge am Kabinendach sind neu eingedichtet. An Backbord haben wir eine neue Leinenklampe, die vier vorderen Fenster sind gereinigt und haben eine frische Dichtung und zu guter Letzt hat Matthias noch die Backbord Genua-Winsch gereinigt und frisch ge\u00f6lt, die l\u00e4uft jetzt wieder wie neu.<\/p>

Aber nat\u00fcrlich sind auch wieder neue Aufgaben zum Vorschein gekommen: F\u00fcr den Tiefenmesser muss ich mir unbedingt etwas einfallen lassen. Die Bespannung der Salon-Decke muss dringend saniert werden. Der Landstromanschluss war schon im August 2020 auf dem Programm, das muss auch einmal erledigt werden. Und wir haben beschlossen, dass wir zur Sicherheit wohl einen neuen Diesel-Tank einbauen sollten. Die rostige Ecke stellt wohl noch keine unmittelbare Gefahr dar, aber wir wissen nicht, wie der Tank innen beschaffen ist \u2013 ich habe von Tanks gelesen, die von innen her durchgerostet und undicht geworden sind. Von den vielen \u201eKleinigkeiten\u201c habe ich dabei noch gar nichts gesagt. Es ist also genug zu tun!<\/p>

When we start our way back after five full days of work, some things are done: The new antifouling is applied, the deck fittings on the cabin roof are newly sealed. On port side we have a new line cleat, the four forward windows are cleaned and have a fresh seal and as a \u201clast favour\u201d Matthias has cleaned and freshly oiled the port genoa winch, which now runs like new again.<\/p>

But of course, new tasks have come up again: I definitely have to come up with something to fix the depth gauge. The covering of the salon ceiling urgently needs to be renovated. The shore power connection was already on the agenda in August 2020, that also must be done sometime soon. And we decided that we should probably install a new diesel tank just to be on the safe side. The rusty corner probably doesn’t pose an immediate danger yet, but we don’t know what the tank is like inside – I’ve read of tanks that have rusted through and leaked from the inside. I haven’t even mentioned the many „little things“ yet. So, there is enough to do.<\/p>

Immerhin hat Matthias jetzt endlich unsere pepperbird<\/em> gesehen, und obwohl er nur in Dreck und Staub an ihr gearbeitet hat, w\u00e4hrend sie an Land stand, scheint sie ihm au\u00dferordentlich gut zu gefallen, und wir beide freuen uns schon darauf, sie im kommenden Herbst zu segeln, wenn der n\u00e4chste T\u00f6rn mit Hanna, Matthias und mir schon fix geplant ist.<\/p>

At least, Matthias has now finally seen our pepperbird<\/em>, and although he only worked on her in dirt and dust while she was on land, he seems to like her extraordinarily well, and we are both looking forward to sailing her next fall, when the next trip with Hanna, Matthias and I is already firmly planned.<\/p>
