Trotz Corona ist das meine vierte Reise zum Boot in den Niederlanden. Und diesmal sind Hanna und Matthias mit von der Partie. Wir drei waren schon 1991 eine gute Crew. Zuerst mit einem Kanu in den Kan\u00e4len von Tortuguero, Costa Rica, und danach f\u00fcr drei Wochen auf einer \u201eSafari\u201c mit einem uralten Toyota Land-Cruiser. Despite Corona, this is my fourth trip to the boat in the Netherlands. And this time Hanna and Matthias are with me. We three were already a good crew in 1991. First with a canoe in the canals of Tortuguero, Costa Rica, and then for three weeks on a „jungle-safari“ with an ancient Toyota Land-Cruiser. This will be our first „sea voyage“ together.<\/p>

Letztendlich bleiben wir mit unserer pepperbird<\/em> jedoch binnen. Das Grundprinzip, auf jeden Fall Hannas Stresslevel in Grenzen zu halten, muss gewahrt bleiben. Die Wetteraussichten sind jetzt, mitten im Herbst, zu unsicher als dass wir uns auf das Wattenmeer hinauswagen sollten. Wir beschlie\u00dfen also, zun\u00e4chst nach Lemmer zu segeln und dann auf der \u201eStaande Mastroute\u201c durch Friesland zu fahren, ein System von Binnenkan\u00e4len und Seen, das von Zeeland bei Belgien bis nach Emden in Deutschland f\u00fchrt. Matthias und ich waren da schon 2013 und ’14. Also bewegen wir uns im Gro\u00dfen und Ganzen auf vertrautem Gebiet. F\u00fcr Spannung sorgt ohnehin die Aussicht, dass Hanna ihre ersten Schleusen und Br\u00fccken durchfahren wird.<\/p>

Wir beide kommen ein paar Tage vor Matthias nach Lelystad, quartieren uns zun\u00e4chst im Hotel Leonardo im Zentrum von Lelystad ein und sind am Montag, dem 11. Oktober, in der Marina, um das Boot ins Wasser zu bringen. Es ist das erste Mal, dass wir das selber machen und alles l\u00e4uft problemlos ab. Das Schmieren und Entl\u00fcften der Stopfbuchse, der Anschluss der Batterien, das Starten des Motors, das Verlegen an den Liegeplatz, das Anschlagen der Segel, das Putzen und Ausr\u00fcsten des Bootes \u2013 was habe ich mir nicht alles als Charter-Kunde erspart! <\/p>

In the end, however, we will stay inland with our pepperbird<\/em>. The basic principle of keeping Hanna’s stress level within limits must be maintained if ever possible. The weather outlook now, in the middle of autumn, is too uncertain for us to venture out onto the Wadden Sea. So, we decide to sail to Lemmer first and then take the „Staande Mastroute“ through Friesland, a system of inland canals and lakes that leads from Zealand near Belgium all the way to Emden in Germany. Matthias and I had already been there in 2013 and ’14, so by and large we are on familiar territory. The prospect of Hanna passing through her first locks and bridges is a source of excitement anyway.<\/p>

We both arrive in Lelystad a couple of days before Matthias, first staying at the Hotel Leonardo in the centre of Lelystad and are in the marina on Monday 11 October to put the boat in the water. It’s the first time we’ve done this ourselves and everything goes smoothly. Lubricating and bleeding the stuffing box, connecting the batteries, starting the engine, moving it to the berth, hoisting the sails, cleaning, and outfitting the boat \u2013 I did not know how much I\u2019ve spared myself as a charter customer!<\/p>

Am Mittwoch, dem 13., holen wir Matthias vom Bahnhof ab und am
Donnerstag, 14. Oktober
laufen wir Richtung Lemmer am IJsselmeer aus. Es ist ein k\u00fchler, wolkenverhangener Tag, der Wind moderat aus westlicher Richtung, so dass wir auf einem bequemen Halbwindkurs gem\u00fctlich dahinsegeln k\u00f6nnen. Nach dem Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck brechen wir auf und am Nachmittag sind wir in der Marina \u201eFriese Hoek\u201c in einer Dalbenbox gut festgemacht. Wir haben noch Zeit f\u00fcr einen Spaziergang durch das h\u00fcbsche St\u00e4dtchen und besichtigen dabei die Schleuse und die Br\u00fccken, die wir morgen passieren werden.<\/p>

Freitag, 15. Oktober:
Ein wundersch\u00f6ner Herbsttag erwartet uns. Nach dem Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck bew\u00e4ltigen wir souver\u00e4n Hannas erste Schleuse und die drei Br\u00fccken der Stadtdurchfahrt von Lemmer. Kurze Zeit sp\u00e4ter sind wir am Prinses Margrietkanaal und k\u00f6nnen sogar noch eine Zeitlang segeln. Bei dem frischen n\u00f6rdlichen Wind k\u00f6nnen wir mit gerefftem Segel gerade noch an den Fahrwasserbojen entlangfahren. Der Wind dreht dann allerdings weiter nach Ost, daher bergen wir nach Mittag die Segel und setzen die Fahrt unter Motor fort.<\/p>

On Wednesday, the 13th, we pick up Matthias from the train station and on
Thursday, 14 October
we set sail for Lemmer on the IJsselmeer. It is a cool, cloudy day, the wind moderate from the west, so we can sail along comfortably on a beam reach. After breakfast we set off and, in the afternoon, we are well moored in a dolphin box in the marina „Friese Hoek“. We still have time for a walk through the pretty little town, visiting the lock and the bridges we will pass tomorrow.<\/p>

Friday, 15 October:
A beautiful autumn day awaits us. After breakfast we master Hanna’s first lock and the three bridges of Lemmer’s town passage with aplomb. A short time later we are at the Prinses Margrietkanaal and can even sail for a while. With the fresh northerly wind, we can just about keep course along the fairway buoys with reefed sails. However, the wind then shifts further to the east, so after noon we take down the sails and continue sailing under motor.<\/p>

Als ich kurze Zeit sp\u00e4ter einen Blick in den Motorraum werfe, sehe ich, dass irgendwo Diesel austritt und bereits eine ziemliche Sauerei entstanden ist. Matthias schaut sich die Sache auch an und vermutet, dass die Zuleitung zu den Einspritzd\u00fcsen irgendwo undicht geworden sein muss, Diesel spritzt offenbar unter Druck aus irgendeinem Leck. Mitten im stark befahrenen Kanal k\u00f6nnen wir nirgends halten, also m\u00fcssen wir wohl oder \u00fcbel weiterfahren, bis wir an einem Steg festmachen k\u00f6nnen. Kurze Zeit sp\u00e4ter biegen wir in einen Nebenkanal ab, wo wir einen der Ferien-Liege-Pl\u00e4tze des Touristenklubs nutzen, um uns die Sache genauer anzuschauen. Matthias hatte richtig vermutet. Einer der beiden Anschl\u00fcsse zu den Einspritzd\u00fcsen hat sich gelockert und nachdem die Mutter wieder festgezogen wurde, ist das Problem behoben. Notd\u00fcrftig wischen wir noch den ausgelaufenen Diesel weg, dann kann die Reise weitergehen.<\/p>

Ein paar Fahrstunden und einige Br\u00fccken sp\u00e4ter sind wir in Irnsum, in der N\u00e4he von Grouw, in einem kleinen Yachthafen festgemacht. Wir sind m\u00fcde und hungrig, das einzige Gasthaus des Ortes liegt etwas au\u00dferhalb, ca. 1,5 km entfernt. Als wir jedoch noch m\u00fcder und noch hungriger dort ankommen, stellt sich heraus, dass gerade Oktober-Fest gefeiert wird und man ohne Reservierung keine Chance auf einen Platz hat. Die Dirndlkleider und Lederhosen, mit denen die Friesinnen und Friesen dort ihre Z\u00fcnftigkeit ausleben, schrecken uns aber hinreichend ab, so dass wir uns sofort auf den Heimweg machen. Hannas Abendessen l\u00e4sst uns das Debakel schnell vergessen.<\/p>

When I look in the engine room a short time later, I see that diesel is leaking from somewhere and has already made quite a mess. Matthias also takes a look and suspects that the supply line to the injectors must have sprung a leak somewhere, diesel is obviously spraying under pressure from some point. We can’t stop anywhere in the middle of this busy canal, so we have to go on willy-nilly until we can moor at a safe place. A short time later we turn into a side canal, where we use one of the tourist club\u2019s holiday jetties to take a closer look. Matthias had guessed correctly. One of the two connections to the injectors had come loose and after the nut was tightened again, the problem is solved. We make a makeshift job of mopping up the leaking diesel, and then the journey can continue.<\/p>

A few hours of sailing and a few bridges later, we are moored in a small marina in Irnsum, near Grouw. We are tired and hungry, the only inn of the village is a little outside, about 1.5 km away. But when we arrive there, even more tired and hungry, it turns out that there is an \u201cOktoberfest\u201d going on and you have no chance of getting a seat without a reservation. The dirndl dresses and lederhosen that the Frisians wear there to live out their „bajuwaric heartyness“ are enough of a deterrent to get us on our way home right away. Hanna’s dinner, however, quickly makes us forget the debacle.<\/p>

Samstag, 16. Oktober
Wir \u00fcberlegen, wie es jetzt weiter gehen k\u00f6nnte. Am kommenden Donnerstag wollen wir auf jeden Fall in Lelystad zur\u00fcck sein, weil wir am Samstag den Termin am Kran haben und auch den Dieseltank noch ausbauen m\u00fcssen. Au\u00dferdem muss vor der Heimreise das Boot winterfest gemacht werden, auch das braucht seine Zeit. Mit Blick auf Wind und Wetter wird klar, dass wir alle Pl\u00e4ne, \u00fcber Harlingen vielleicht doch ins Wattenmeer zu kommen, f\u00fcr dieses Mal streichen k\u00f6nnen. Gegen Mitte der n\u00e4chsten Woche werden zunehmend Starkwindverh\u00e4ltnisse angesagt, also bleiben wir wohl besser binnen. Wir kalkulieren also die Entfernungen und unsere bisherigen Erfahrungen. Wenn wir heute gut vorankommen, schaffen wir es bis am Abend locker nach Dokkum, sollte sich etwas verz\u00f6gern, k\u00f6nnten wir in Leeuwarden bleiben und eventuell am n\u00e4chsten Tag noch weiter nach Norden fahren.<\/p>

Also brechen wir fr\u00fch auf. Leider haben wir heute so gut wie keinen Wind, also bleiben die Segel eingepackt. Bei Wergea wollen wir nicht die breite Umfahrungsstrecke nutzen, sondern den malerischen Ort durchfahren. Im Zentrum redet uns aber eine Frau an: wir kommen hier nicht durch, die Br\u00fccke ist nicht in Betrieb. Also wenden wir an der einzigen breiteren Stelle der Stadtgraacht und fahren doch au\u00dfen rum. Gesehen haben wir das St\u00e4dtchen ja trotzdem.<\/p>

Saturday, 16 October
We are thinking about how to proceed now. We want to be back in Lelystad next Thursday in any case, because we have an appointment with the crane on Saturday and we shall also remove the diesel tank. In addition, the boat has to be winterised before we go home, which also takes time. With a view to the wind and weather, it becomes clear that we can cancel all plans to perhaps reach the Wadden Sea via Harlingen for this time. Towards the middle of next week, increasingly strong winds are forecast, so we’d better stay inland. Therefore, we calculate the distances and our experiences so far. If we make good progress today, we can easily make it to Dokkum by the evening; if there is a delay, we could stay in Leeuwarden and possibly sail further north the next day.<\/p>

So, we set off early. Unfortunately, we have almost no wind today, so the sails stay packed. At Wergea we don’t want to use the wide bypass route but sail through the picturesque little town. In the centre, however, a woman talks to us: we can’t get through here, the bridge is not in operation. Subsequently, we turn around at the only wider part of the town\u2019s main graacht and go back to the main canal. We have seen the town anyway.<\/p>

Wir kommen weiterhin gut voran, auch die Durchfahrt durch Leeuwarden, die Hautstadt Frieslands, verl\u00e4uft flott und ohne gro\u00dfe Pausen, trotz einer lauten Stra\u00dfenparty, die sowohl an Land als auch auf den Wasserstra\u00dfen gefeiert wird.<\/p>

Wie schon an den letzten Tagen wird es auch heute am Abend noch sonnig und im sch\u00f6nsten n\u00f6rdlichen Abendlicht tuckern wir durch kleine friesische Bauernd\u00f6rfer wie Wyns, Bartlehiem und Burdaard, wo der Br\u00fcckenw\u00e4rter zwischen den beiden Br\u00fccken mit dem Rad herumflitzt, um uns die Durchfahrt zu erm\u00f6glichen. Rechtzeitig vor der Br\u00fcckensperrstunde kommen wir in Dokkum an. Kaum zu glauben, dass dieser Ort, heute 5 km von der K\u00fcste entfernt, fr\u00fcher ein stark frequentierter Seehafen gewesen ist. Im schicken Bistro \u201eDe Koffiebranderij\u201c genie\u00dfen wir ein exzellentes Abendessen mit feinen Niederl\u00e4ndischen Bieren.<\/p>

We continue to make good progress, even the passage through Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland, goes smoothly and without major breaks, despite a loud street party being celebrated both on land and on the waterways.<\/p>

As during the last few days, it is getting sunny in the late afternoon and in the most beautiful northern evening light we chug through small Frisian farming villages like Wyns, Bartlehiem and Burdaard, where the bridge keeper whizzes around on his bike between the two bridges to allow us to pass. We arrive in Dokkum in time before the bridge closure hour. It’s hard to believe that the place, now some 5 km inland, used to be a busy seaport in the past. In the chic bistro „De Koffiebranderij“ we enjoy an excellent dinner with fine Dutch beers.<\/p>
