Das war unser bisher l\u00e4ngster Aufenthalt in den Niederlanden. Ich hatte fast f\u00fcnf Wochen Urlaub, mit Vor- und Nachbereitung und je zwei Tagen Fahrzeit mit dem Auto sind davon drei Wochen Segelurlaub \u00fcbrig geblieben. Etwas mehr als eine Woche waren wir zu dritt und etwas weniger als zwei Wochen zu viert mit Hund an Bord. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This was our longest stay in the Netherlands so far. I had almost five weeks of holiday, with preparation and follow-up and two days each of driving time by car, three weeks of sailing holiday remained. Die Crew war etwas eigenartig zusammengestellt, drei Leute \u00fcber sechzig, eine Frau unter drei\u00dfig; ein Paar mit erwachsener Tochter und ein alter Freund der Familie; drei Menschen mit Sozialberuf und ein Techniker; drei \u00d6sterreicher*innen und ein Deutscher; vier Menschen und ein Pudel; zwei erfahrene Segler und zwei (beinahe) Anf\u00e4ngerinnen.<\/p>

Trotzdem, oder vielleicht gerade deshalb, hat diese Crew hervorragend „funktioniert“. Und man darf nicht vergessen, pepperbird ist 8,8 m lang und 3,2 m breit – au\u00dfen! Zwei Wochen lang – und nicht nur bei Sch\u00f6nwetter – haben wir es nicht nur miteinander ausgehalten, sondern viel Spa\u00df miteinander gehabt und die Reise genossen. Das muss uns erst jemand nachmachen…<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The crew was a bit strangely composed, three people over sixty, one under thirty; a couple with an adult daughter and an old family friend; three people with a social profession and a technician; three Austrians and one German; four people and a poodle; two experienced sailors and two (almost) beginners.<\/p>

Despite this, or perhaps because of it, this crew „functioned“ brilliantly. And don’t forget, pepperbird is
8.8 m long and 3.2 m wide – on the outside! For a fortnight – and not only in good weather – we not only put up with each other, but had a lot of fun together and enjoyed the trip. Das ist nun meine siebte Segelreise in den Niederlanden und au\u00dfer Ameland und Schiermonnikoog, 2013 und 2014, hatte ich noch keine Wattinseln besucht. Mit der pepperbird waren wir vor allem in S\u00fc\u00dfwasser unterwegs, im IJsselmeer und auf den Kan\u00e4len. Diesmal wollte ich auf jeden Fall wieder in Salzwasser segeln, auch wenn das Wattenmeer „offiziell“ als Binnenrevier gilt. Es w\u00e4re mir auch recht gewesen, wenn wir ein St\u00fcck auf der offenen Nordsee gefahren w\u00e4ren, aber nat\u00fcrlich unter einer Voraussetzung: Alles, nur kein Stress!<\/p>

Die offene Nordsee haben wir diesmal noch nicht erreicht, aber wir haben alle drei westlichen Wattinseln besucht, und zwei lange und vier k\u00fcrzere Touren im Wattenmeer gemacht, die uns allen recht gut gefallen haben. Der erste Segeltag war etwas ungem\u00fctlich, weil wir viel Wind und kaltes Wetter hatten, aber wir wollten einfach starten und gef\u00e4hrlich war es ja nicht.<\/p>

Vom Noordhollands-kanaal habe ich mir etwas mehr erwartet und dass wir nicht bis Amsterdam fahren konnten, geh\u00f6rt zu den unplanbaren Umst\u00e4nden einer Reise mit dem Segelboot. Aber wie immer kann ich sagen, dass wir nichts Wesentliches kaputt gemacht haben und dass sich niemand weh getan hat.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This is now my seventh sailing trip in the Netherlands and apart from Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, in 2013 and 2014, I had not yet visited any Wadden Islands. With pepperbird so far we were mainly sailing in fresh water, in the IJsselmeer and on the canals. This time I definitely wanted to sail in salt water again, even though the Wadden Sea is „officially“ considered an inland area. It would have been fine with me if we had sailed a bit on the open North Sea, but of course under one condition: anything but stress!<\/p>

We didn’t reach the open North Sea this time, but we visited all three western Wadden Islands, and did two long and four shorter tours in the Wadden Sea, which we all quite enjoyed. The first day of sailing was a bit uncomfortable because we had a lot of wind and cold weather, but we just wanted to get started and it wasn’t dangerous at all.<\/p>

I expected a bit more from the Noordhollands-kanaal and the fact that we couldn’t sail all the way to Amsterdam is one of the unforeseeable circumstances of a journey by sailboat. Nun noch ein paar Daten des T\u00f6rns:
Wir sind an zehn Tagen unterwegs gewesen, an denen wir zwischen 7,5 und 32,8 Seemeilen gefahren sind. Wir sind fast 40 Stunden unter Motor gefahren, wobei die Strecken am Nordholland-Kanal mehr als die H\u00e4lfte dieser Zeit ausmachen. Vier Tagesetappen waren l\u00e4nger als 30 Seemeilen, vier l\u00e4nger als 20 und nur zwei waren k\u00fcrzer als 15 Seemeilen.<\/p>

Insgesamt sind wir somit 235,3 Seemeilen gefahren.<\/p>

Wir haben die drei Wattinseln Texel, Vlieland und Terschelling besucht, wobei wir uns auf den ersten beiden etwas l\u00e4nger aufgehalten haben, jeweils vier bis f\u00fcnf Tage. An drei Tagen hatten wir R\u00e4der gemietet und an einem Tag ein Auto.<\/p>

Und falls der finanzielle Aspekt interessiert: F\u00fcr Sprit, Hotels (zwei N\u00e4chte), Marina-Kosten, Auto- und Fahrradmiete sowie f\u00fcr Essen und Trinken haben wir vier etwas mehr als 4.000,00 \u20ac ausgegeben (zwei Wochen zu dritt und zwei Wochen zu viert). Das sind pro Person und Woche ca. 286,00 \u20ac.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Now a few more data of the trip:
We were underway for ten days, during which we sailed between 7.5 and 32.8 nautical miles. We sailed under motor for almost 40 hours, with the stretches along the North Holland Canal accounting for more than half of this time. Four daily legs were longer than 30 nautical miles, four longer than 20 and only two were shorter than 15 nautical miles.<\/p>

In total, we sailed 235.3 nautical miles.<\/p>

We visited the three Wadden islands Texel, Vlieland and Terschelling, staying a little longer on the first two, four to five days each. We rented bikes on three days and a car on one day.<\/p>

And if the financial aspect is of interest: For fuel, hotels (two nights), marina fees, car and bike rental as well as food and drink, the four of us spent a little more than \u20ac4,000.00 (two weeks for three and two weeks for four). Wie geht es weiter?
Ab der zweiten Oktoberwoche wollen Matthias und ich wieder 14 Tage in Lelystad verbringen und ein paar Arbeiten erledigen. Auf der Liste steht neben einigen „Kleinigkeiten“ zum Beispiel die Montage der Ankerwinde oder die Tapezierung der Achterkoje mit Korkplatten. In dieser Zeit m\u00f6chte ich auch mit einigen Spezialisten rund um die Marina (Rigger, Segelmacher, Schlosser…) \u00fcber die Projekte reden, die ich im kommenden Jahr realisieren m\u00f6chte. Dazu geh\u00f6rt eine Renovierung des Mastes, eine Reparatur der Genua bzw. die Herstellung eines kleineren Vorsegels oder auch die Anfertigung eines Hecktr\u00e4gers f\u00fcr Solarpaneele.<\/p>\n

Im kommenden Jahr werden wir vielleicht noch einen kleinen Familient\u00f6rn in die Randmeeren rund um Flevoland machen, bevor die Vorbereitungen auf die \u00dcberquerung des Golfes von Biskaya und die \u00dcberstellung zu den Kanarischen Inseln angegangen werden. Dazu habe ich bereits mit der Marina vereinbart, dass ich am Gel\u00e4nde fallweise im Zelt schlafen kann, wenn die Arbeiten eine \u00dcbernachtung an Bord nicht zulassen.<\/p>\n

What happens next?
From the second week of October, Matthias and I want to spend 14 days in Lelystad again and do some work. On the list, apart from a few „little things“, is for example the installation of the windlass or the wallpapering of the aft berth with cork sheets. During this time I would also like to talk to some specialists around the marina (riggers, sailmakers, locksmiths…) about the projects I would like to realize in the coming year. These include renovating the mast, repairing the genoa or, making a smaller headsail or even making a stern carrier for solar panels.<\/p>

In the coming year, we might do another small family cruise in the „Randmeeren“ around Flevoland before we start preparing for the crossing of the Bay of Biscay and the transfer to the Canary Islands. To this end, I have already agreed with the marina that I can sleep in a tent at the site on a case-by-case basis if the work does not permit an overnight stay on board.<\/p>
