Um m\u00f6glichst z\u00fcgig nach Kreta zu gelangen, wollen wir in l\u00e4ngeren Etappen fahren und zwischendurch ein paar Tage rasten. Da Hanna bisher keine Erfahrung mit Nachtfahrten und 24 Stunden-Etappen hat, waren wir auf die erste lange Strecke – von Koper nach Rimini – sehr gespannt.

In order to get to Crete as quickly as possible, we want to drive in longer stages and take a few days‘ rest in between. As Hanna has no experience of night sailing or 24-hour stages, we were very excited about the first long stretch \u2013 from Koper to Rimini.

Wie immer wurde es sp\u00e4ter als vorgesehen, bevor wir tats\u00e4chlich ablegen konnten. Um acht holten wir die Rechnung vom Marina-B\u00fcro und waren angenehm \u00fcberrascht – es war weniger teuer als bef\u00fcrchtet. Dann trieben sich ein paar Sch\u00fcler in Ruderbooten bei der Hafenausfahrt herum und schlie\u00dflich waren auch unsere Vorbereitungen noch nicht abgeschlossen – erst musste der ganze Haushaltskram seefest verstaut werden.<\/p>

Um 09:15 wurden dann aber die Leinen losgeworfen – bis zu 30 Stunden rechneten wir, bevor sie wieder festgemacht sein w\u00fcrden (wir waren dann aber doch viel schneller). Ein einlaufender Frachter, der auf uns zukam und einen Warnton in unsere Richtung loslie\u00df, st\u00f6rte uns dann nicht weiter beim Segelsetzen – und wir ihn auch nicht! Bei freundlichen 10 Knoten Wind und morgendlicher Frische starteten wir den langen Reisetag – es sollte noch viel Abwechslung auf uns zukommen.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As always, it was later than planned before we could actually cast off. At eight o’clock, we picked up the bill from the marina office and were pleasantly surprised \u2013 it was less expensive than we had feared. Then a few students were messing around in rowing boats at the harbour exit, and finally our preparations were not yet complete \u2013 first, all the household stuff had to be stowed away securely for the voyage.<\/p>

At 09:15 a.m., however, we cast off \u2013 we estimated it would take up to 30 hours before we would tie up again (but we were much faster than that). An incoming freighter that approached us and sounded a warning signal in our direction did not disturb us as we hoisted the sails \u2013 and we did not disturb it either! With a pleasant 10-knot wind and the freshness of the morning, we set off on our long day of travel \u2013 there was still a lot of diversity ahead of us.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Bis Mittag k\u00f6nnen wir so noch gem\u00fctlich vor uns hinsegeln, wobei der Nordostwind immer mehr von achtern kommt, je weiter wir unseren Kurs nach S\u00fcden richten. Wir \u00fcberqueren praktisch den Golf von Triest von Ost nach West und fahren dann die italienische K\u00fcste entlang.\u00a0<\/p>

Wir baumen die Genua aus, damit wir trotz Wind von achtern noch vorw\u00e4rtskommen, aber je h\u00f6her die Sonne steigt, desto schw\u00e4cher wird der Wind. Als wir nur mehr mit 2,5 Knoten dahinkriechen, nehmen wir die Segel weg und starten den Motor – es ist 12:45.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Until midday, we can sail comfortably, with the north-easterly wind coming more and more from astern the further south we head. We practically cross the Gulf of Trieste from east to west and then sail along the Italian coast.<\/p>

We spread the genoa with the boom so that we can still make headway despite the wind from astern, but the higher the sun rises, the weaker the wind becomes. When we are only crawling along at 2.5 knots, we take down the sails and start the engine \u2013 it is 12:45.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

F\u00fcr die n\u00e4chsten fast 12 Stunden \u00e4ndert sich an der Wetterlage nicht viel. Bei Einbruch der Nacht sehen wir Wetterleuchten aus der Gegend von Ravenna, aber diese Gewitter ber\u00fchren uns nicht. Wir essen vom vorgekochten Wurst-Gulasch zu Abend und lassen uns vom guten alten „Rudolph“ (Diesel) \u00fcber die Adria schieben. Den Autopiloten, der in der zweiten Nachth\u00e4lfte seine erste Bew\u00e4hrungsprobe zu bestehen haben wird, nennen wir Horst – Hanna findet „Rudolph und Horst“ klingen nach einem guten Team.<\/p>

Am Nachmittag und am Abend sehen wir zweimal vereinzelte Delfine in der Ferne, aber leider lassen sie sich auf keinen Fototermin ein. Windy, unsere bevorzugte Wind-Vorhersage-App, hat f\u00fcr Mitternacht Ostwind vorhergesagt, der sich im Lauf der Nacht auf bis vier Beaufort steigern sollte. Gegen elf Uhr nachts sp\u00fcren wir die ersten Anzeichen einer Brise, aber zum Segeln ist es noch zu wenig. Um 00:35 k\u00f6nnen wir jedoch den Motor abstellen und segeln wieder z\u00fcgig gegen S\u00fcden.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The weather conditions remain largely unchanged for the next 12 hours. As night falls, we see lightning in the Ravenna area, but these storms do not affect us. We eat pre-cooked sausage goulash for dinner and let good old „Rudolph“ (Diesel) push us across the Adriatic Sea. We christen the autopilot, which will have to pass its first real test in the second half of the night, „Horst“ \u2013 Hanna thinks „Rudolph and Horst“ sounds like a good team.<\/p>

In the afternoon and evening, we see occasional dolphins in the distance twice, but unfortunately they don\u2019t pose for photos. Windy, our preferred wind forecast app, has predicted an easterly wind for midnight, which should increase to four Beaufort during the night. Around 11 p.m., we feel the first signs of a breeze, but it’s still too weak for sailing. At 00:35 a.m., however, we are able to turn off the engine and sail swiftly south again.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

W\u00e4hrend wir zun\u00e4chst die Ruhe des n\u00e4chtlichen Segelns genie\u00dfen und unser milchiges Kielwasser (Biolumineszenz) bestaunen, gestaltet sich die Zeit ab etwa 02:00 Fr\u00fch sehr m\u00fchsam. Die vier Beaufort werfen ein unangenehme kurze und steile See auf, die immer wieder Spritzwasser \u00fcber das Deck spr\u00fcht. Die Schaukelei schl\u00e4gt uns beiden auf die Magennerven und auch wenn wir beide handlungsf\u00e4hig bleiben (was bleibt uns auch anderes \u00fcbrig?) ist die Lage alles andere als angenehm.<\/p>

Durch die heftige Schaukelei l\u00f6st sich irgendwann die Sicherungsleine des Ankers und dieser beginnt in seiner Halterung herumzuschlagen. Das muss sofort behoben werden! W\u00e4hrend ich mich in der Gischt am Bug mit der Halteleine plage, malt sich Hanna Horrorszenarien aus: Was soll sie tun, wenn ich pl\u00f6tzlich \u00fcber Bord gehe? …<\/p>

Das tue ich nat\u00fcrlich nicht, aber es zeigt sich, dass wir zwei schon eine verdammt kleine Crew darstellen und dass wir zu zweit doch noch recht wenig Erfahrung mit stressigen Situationen haben. Mit „Stressigen Situationen“ ist beim Segeln am Meer allerdings immer zu rechnen, also werden wir weiter mit einer steilen Lernkurve rechnen m\u00fcssen. Wie wir damit umgehen, werden wir in den n\u00e4chsten Tagen in Rimini ausbaldowern m\u00fcssen.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

While we initially enjoy the tranquillity of sailing at night and marvel at our milky wake (bioluminescence), things become very difficult from around 02:00 a.m. onwards. The four Beaufort winds create an unpleasant short and steep sea, which repeatedly sprays water over the deck. The rocking motion upsets both of our stomachs, and even though we both remain capable of acting (what else can we do?), the situation is anything but pleasant.<\/p>

At some point, the violent rocking causes the anchor’s safety line to come loose, and the anchor starts to banging around in its bracket. This has to be fixed immediately! While I struggle with the holding line in the spray at the bow, Hanna imagines horror scenarios: What should she do if I suddenly go overboard? …<\/p>

Of course, I don’t go overboard, but it shows that the two of us are a damn small crew and that we still have very little experience with stressful situations. However, „stressful situations“ are always to be expected when sailing at sea, so we will have to continue to expect a steep learning curve. Als schlie\u00dflich der Tag anbricht und die Sonne \u00fcber den Horizont steigt, wird die Lage f\u00fcr uns nicht wirklich besser. Der Wind dreht n\u00e4mlich – wie auch von Windy vorhergesagt – auf S\u00fcd und in dem flachen, nur gerade etwas \u00fcber 30 m tiefen Wasser produziert das eine widerliche steile Kreuzsee, die unseren strapazierten M\u00e4gen noch mehr zusetzt.\u00a0<\/p>

Eine Weile segeln wir noch weiter, aber schlie\u00dflich l\u00e4sst der Wind auch noch nach, sodass wir mit dem Motor wesentlich schneller vorw\u00e4rtskommen. Sp\u00e4ter k\u00f6nnten wir zwar wieder segeln, aber auch die Aussicht auf eine stabilere Lage unter Segeln kann Hanna nicht dazu motivieren, disich e dazu n\u00f6tigen Man\u00f6ver auf sich zu nehmen.<\/p>

So motoren wir also im zunehmend hei\u00dfer werdenden Morgen auf Rimini zu, wo wir um etwa 09:00 ankommen. Wir haben 126 Seemeilen in circa 24 Stunden zur\u00fcckgelegt. Der Marinero, der uns den Liegeplatz zuweist, macht es dann noch einmal spannend: Zuerst schickt er uns nach links statt nach rechts und dann verwechselt er I mit A (englische Aussprache), aber schlie\u00dflich finden wir rechts den Steg „I“ und dort den Liegeplatz 109, wo ein Kollege uns beim Anlegen an einem Fingersteg unterst\u00fctzt. Wir versorgen noch notd\u00fcrftig unser B\u00f6tchen, essen einen Happen und schlafen den ganzen Nachmittag.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When dawn finally breaks and the sun rises above the horizon, the situation doesn’t really improve for us. As predicted by Windy, the wind shifts to the south, and in the shallow water, which is only just over 30 metres deep, this produces a nasty steep cross sea that further upset our already strained stomachs.<\/p>

We continue sailing for a while, but eventually the wind dies down, so we make much faster progress with the engine. Later, we could have sailed again, but even the prospect of a more stable situation under sail cannot motivate Hanna to undertake the necessary manoeuvres.<\/p>

So we motor towards Rimini in the increasingly hot morning, arriving at around 09:00 a.m. We have covered 126 nautical miles in less than 24 hours. The marinero who assigns us our berth makes things exciting once again: first he sends us to the left instead of the right, and then he confuses I with A (English pronunciation), but finally we find pier \u2018I\u2019 on the right and berth 109, where a colleague helps us to moor at a finger pontoon. Am Abend machen wir noch einen gem\u00fctlichen Spaziergang in die nahegelegene Altstadt, gehen auf eine Pizza (die sich als „Pinse“ entpuppt und hervorragend schmeckt!) und genie\u00dfen den still stehenden Erdboden, auch wenn er f\u00fcr uns noch schwankt! Ein paar Tage werden wir jetzt hier bleiben – Windy prophezeit uns nur Gegenwind f\u00fcr die n\u00e4chste Woche. Ariminum (der antike Name von Rimini) und seine reiche Geschichte scheint ohnehin einen Besuch wert zu sein und das nahe San Marino wollen wir auch besuchen…<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the evening, we take a leisurely stroll to the nearby old town, go for a pizza (which turns out to be a „pinse“ and tastes excellent!) and enjoy the stationary ground, even if it still feels like it\u2019s swaying beneath us!
We will stay here for a few days now \u2013 Windy is predicting nothing but headwinds for the next week.
