Nach einer recht entspannten Flugreise von Wien nach Heraklion \u00fcber Athen sind wir nach einer Nacht in einem Apartment nahe dem Flughafen am letzten Dienstag (03.03.) hier in Sit\u00eda angekommen. Unsere Pepperbird schwimmt noch und sie ist erstaunlich sauber geblieben, nur etwas W\u00fcstenstaub von den S\u00fcdwinden hat sich abgesetzt.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After a fairly relaxed flight from Vienna to Herakleion via Athens, we arrived here in Sit\u00eda last Tuesday (3 March) after spending the night in an apartment near the airport. Am Nachmittag des 3. M\u00e4rz sind wir also mit dem Bus von Heraklion hier im Osten angekommen und haben erst einmal Platz im Boot schaffen m\u00fcssen, weil die Segel und andere Utensilien noch im Salon und im Vorschiff herumgelegen sind. Dann hat das Kopfzerbrechen begonnen: wie k\u00f6nnen wir hier f\u00fcr den „dritten Mann“ Platz freir\u00e4umen?<\/p>

Wir haben eindeutig zu viel Zeug an Bord und noch immer keine Lagerm\u00f6glichkeit in der Umgebung organisiert. Sch\u00f6n w\u00e4re es, wenn wir die Achterkoje nutzen k\u00f6nnten, aber das wird sich wohl nicht mehr ausgehen, also werden noch etwas mehr Kram da hinten verschwinden lassen. Auch in der Backskiste sollte noch etwas untergebracht werden k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On the afternoon of 3 March, we arrived here in the east by bus from Herakleion and first had to make room in the boat because the sails and other equipment were still lying around in the saloon and in the forward cabin. Then the headache began: how could we make room for the \u2018third man\u2019?<\/p>

We clearly have too much stuff on board and still haven’t organised any storage space in the area. It would be nice if we could use the aft cabin for sleeping, but that’s not going to work out, so we’ll have to stow some more stuff in the back. We should also be able to fit some things in the cockpit locker.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Am ersten Abend sehen wir den Vollmond \u00fcber der Halbinsel Sideros aufgehen, und am n\u00e4chsten Morgen kommt Jorgos, unser Vertreter im Winter, zu Besuch an Bord. Er hatte es wirklich nicht leicht. In seinen 58 Jahren, sagt er, habe er noch nie einen so st\u00fcrmischen Winter erlebt. Er konnte ohnehin nicht viel tun, aber wenn es notwendig geworden w\u00e4re, h\u00e4tte er es geschafft, die Pepperbird an einen sicheren Ort zu bringen. Gl\u00fccklicherweise war das nicht n\u00f6tig, und er war sichtlich erleichtert, die Verantwortung wieder abgeben zu k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>

Inzwischen haben wir uns wieder gut an Bord eingelebt. Das Gro\u00dfsegel ist bereits angeschlagen, und wir haben den Traveller-Schlitten erfolgreich repariert. Wir haben sogar erste Versuche unternommen, an Bord Brot (Baguettes) zu backen, wenn auch mit gemischtem Erfolg.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On the first evening, we see the full moon rise over the Sideros Peninsula, and the next morning, Jorgos, our representative in winter, comes to visit us on board. He really hasn’t had it easy. In his 58 years, he says, he has never experienced such a stormy winter. There wasn’t much he could do anyway, but if it had become necessary, he would have managed to move the Pepperbird to a safe place. Fortunately, it wasn’t necessary, and he was visibly relieved to be able to hand over responsibility again.<\/p>

In the meantime, we have settled back in quite nicely on board. The mainsail is already rigged, and we have successfully repaired the traveller carriage. Heute ist Sonntag, der Internationale Frauentag. Leider hat Hanna seit einigen Tagen eine schwere Erk\u00e4ltung und wird sich daher heute einen richtigen Ruhetag g\u00f6nnen. Es gibt nicht mehr viel zu tun, bevor Peter am Dienstag am Flughafen ankommt.<\/p>

Wir wollen am Dienstagmorgen die Genua anschlagen, und Peter wird uns helfen, die beiden Anker einzuholen. Zu dritt ist das definitiv einfacher als zu zweit. Dann m\u00fcssen wir noch Vorr\u00e4te einkaufen und auf gutes Wetter hoffen. Mal sehen, ob sich der Donnerstag als Abreisetag ausgeht; wenn nicht, fahren wir am Freitag. Today is Sunday, International Women’s Day. Unfortunately, Hanna has had a bad cold for a few days and will therefore be taking a real day of rest today. There isn’t much left to do before Peter arrives at the airport on Tuesday.<\/p>

We want to hoist the genoa on Tuesday morning, and Peter will help us pull up the two anchors. It’s definitely easier with three people than two. Then we need to stock up on supplies and hope for good weather. We’ll see if Thursday works out as our departure day; if not, we’ll leave on Friday.
