Die Witterung ist einfach zu instabil, Regenschauer sind jederzeit zu erwarten und in der Schlucht, deren Pfad sich teilweise mehr als\u00a0 100 m senkrecht \u00fcber der Talsohle windet, brauchen wir keinen rutschigen Boden. Wir nennen sie „sightseeing by car“, unsere Ausfl\u00fcge in die Umgebung von Sit\u00eda.<\/p>

Am Montag vor Peters Flug fahren wir zun\u00e4chst nach Agios Nikolas, wo wir dem Regen durch den Besuch des arch\u00e4ologischen Museums ausweichen. Das haben Hanna und ich zwar im Vorjahr schon einmal gesehen, aber die Sammlung ist sehr umfangreich und sehr gut strukturiert und die ausgestellten Artefakte sind mit einem sehr\u00a0schl\u00fcssigen Konzept pr\u00e4sentiert. Das sieht man gern mehr als einmal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The weather is simply too unsettled; rain showers are expected at any moment, and in the gorge, where the path winds its way in places more than 100 metres vertically above the valley floor, we don\u2019t need slippery ground. We call our excursions in the area around Sit\u00eda \u2018sightseeing by car\u2019.<\/p>

On the Monday before Peter\u2019s flight, we head first to Agios Nikolas, where we take shelter from the rain by visiting the archaeological museum. Although Hanna and I had already seen it the previous year, the collection is very extensive and well-organised, and the artefacts on display are presented according to a very coherent concept. It\u2019s the sort of place you\u2019re happy to visit more than once.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Nach einem Kaffee mit griechischen Mehlspeisen unter dicht bew\u00f6lktem Himmel wollen wir wieder in den S\u00fcden fahren – diesmal werden wir aber keinen Wasserfall mehr suchen, sondern wollen das Kloster Kaps\u00e1 besuchen, oder wie es mit vollem Namen hei\u00dft „\u0399\u03b5\u03c1\u03ac \u039c\u03bf\u03bd\u03ae \u03a4\u03b9\u03bc\u03af\u03bf\u03c5 \u03a0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b4\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5 \u039a\u03b1\u03c8\u03ac“ \u2013 „Heiliges Kloster des heiligen Vorl\u00e4ufers Kaps\u00e1“. Ein M\u00f6nch, der sogar ein paar Worte Deutsch konnte, hat uns die Kirche aufgesperrt und selbstgebackene Kekse spendiert. Dann lud er uns auch noch ein, die Einsiedlerh\u00f6hle des Heiligen Gerontogiannis zu besichtigen, der im 19. Jahrhundert 17 Jahre lang in dem Felsloch gelebt hat.<\/p>

Anschlie\u00dfend fuhren wir zu einem einsamen Fischerhafen, zu dem es keinen Ort, sondern nur ein gro\u00dfes Dieselkraftwerk gibt. Der Hafen schaut sehr gut gesch\u00fctzt aus, aber er soll im Sommer voll mit Fischerbooten sein und nur Felsen und ein Fabriksgeb\u00e4ude als Nachbarschaft ist dann auch etwas \u00f6de.\u00a0<\/p>

Auf der Heimfahrt passierten wir noch Ziros in der Hochebene und besichtigten die venezianische Ansiedlung von Voila, bevor wir im letzten Licht des Tages nach Sit\u00eda zur\u00fcckkehrten.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After a coffee with Greek pastries under a heavily overcast sky, we decide to head south again \u2013 but this time we won\u2019t be looking for a waterfall; instead, we want to visit Kaps\u00e1 Monastery, or as it is known in full, \u201c\u0399\u03b5\u03c1\u03ac \u039c\u03bf\u03bd\u03ae \u03a4\u03b9\u03bc\u03af\u03bf\u03c5 \u03a0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b4\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5 \u039a\u03b1\u03c8\u03ac\u201d \u2013 \u201cHoly Monastery of Saint John the Baptist at Kaps\u00e1\u201d. A monk, who even knew a few words of German, unlocked the church for us and treated us to some homemade biscuits. He then invited us to visit the hermit\u2019s cave of Saint Gerontogiannis, who lived in the rock-cut cave for 17 years in the 19th century.<\/p>

We then drove to a secluded fishing harbour, which has no surrounding village, just a large diesel power station. The harbour looks very well sheltered, but it is said to be full of fishing boats in summer, and having only rocks and a factory building for neighbours does make it a bit of a desolate place.<\/p>

On the way home, we passed through Ziros on the plateau and visited the Venetian settlement of Voila, before returning to Sit\u00eda in the last light of day.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Am n\u00e4chsten Tag konnten wir nur einen kurzen Ausflug in die unmittelbare Umgebung machen, weil Peter noch fertig packen musste und wir uns f\u00fcr die \u00dcbersiedlung in ein kleineres Apartment vorbereiteten.\u00a0<\/p>

Daher wurde es Nachmittag, bis wir schlie\u00dflich zum Kloster Toplou und zum Dattelpalmenwald von Va\u00ef aufbrachen. Unser letztes Ziel, die Bucht von Itanos, war auch das erste Ziel, das wir fast zwei Wochen vorher mit dem Segelboot angesteuert hatten…<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The next day, we were only able to take a short trip to the immediate vicinity, as Peter still had to finish packing and we were getting ready to move into a smaller studio apartment.<\/p>

So it was already afternoon by the time we finally set off for Toplou Monastery and the date palm forest at Va\u00ef.
