Am Donnerstag bin ich mit J\u00fcrgen von Kouremenos hierhergefahren und nach zwei fast schlaflosen N\u00e4chten fahre ich mit ihm wieder zur\u00fcck nach Kouremenos. Samstag ist der einzige Tag, an dem es ruhig genug ist, um die Strecke von plus\/minus zw\u00f6lf Seemeilen halbwegs ertr\u00e4glich zu bew\u00e4ltigen. Die Betonung liegt auf „halbwegs“!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On Thursday, I sailed here from Kouremenos with J\u00fcrgen, and after two almost sleepless nights, I\u2019m travelling back with him to Kouremenos. Saturday is the only day when it seems calm enough to make the journey of roughly twelve nautical miles reasonably bearable. The emphasis is on \u2018reasonably\u2019!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Der starke Wind und die noch st\u00e4rkeren B\u00f6en aus Nordwest haben einen unangenehmen Schwell erzeugt, der sich langsam in der ganzen Bucht ausbreitet. Die Pepperbird wird von den Wellen seitlich getroffen und bringen sie zum Rollen. Das ist die unangenehmste Bewegung, die ein Schiff vollf\u00fchren kann. Zum Gl\u00fcck bin ich jetzt schon lang genug an Bord und werde davon nicht seekrank.\u00a0<\/p>

In der Nacht macht die Entlastungsleine am Anker ein starkes quietschendes Ger\u00e4usch und am Morgen sehe ich, dass die Leine an der Scheuerleiste scheuert (daher der Name!) und ich suche ein St\u00fcck Schlauch aus der Backskiste mit der ich die Leine sch\u00fctze. Ich hoffe, dass damit auch das Ger\u00e4usch verschwindet – leider vergeblich, jetzt quietsche die Leine im Schlauch…<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The strong wind and the even stronger gusts from the north-west have created an unpleasant swell that is slowly spreading across the whole bay. The Pepperbird is being hit from the side by the waves, causing it to roll. That is the most unpleasant motion a boat can experience. Fortunately, I\u2019ve been on board long enough now that I don\u2019t get seasick from it.<\/p>

During the night, the anchor support rope makes a loud squeaking noise, and in the morning I see that the rope is rubbing against the rubbing strake (hence the name!) so I fetch a length of hose from the storage locker to protect the rope. I hope that this will also make the noise go away \u2013 unfortunately to no avail; now the line is squeaking against the hose…<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Ich bleibe den ganzen Tag an Bord, schreibe an diesem Blog und genie\u00dfe die Ruhe und die Einsamkeit. Es ist trotzdem ein eigenartiges Gef\u00fchl, allein auf engem Raum die Zeit zu verbringen. In der Nacht legen die B\u00f6en wom\u00f6glich noch an Heftigkeit zu, aber gegen Morgen wird es doch ein wenig ruhiger und ich kann noch etwas schlafen.<\/p>

Nach dem Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck mache ich das Dinghi fertig\u00a0und fahre an Land – Hanna, Livia und J\u00fcrgen sind schon auf dem Weg nach Kato Zakros. Ich komme als erster an und g\u00f6nne mir eine sch\u00f6ne Tasse Espresso im Akrogiali. Als die drei schlie\u00dflich eintrudeln, sitzen wir noch ein wenig zusammen, bevor J\u00fcrgen und ich zur Pepperbird aufbrechen. Ich habe das Boot in der Fr\u00fch schon seeklar gemacht, also m\u00fcssen wir nur noch das Dinghi verstauen und den Anker aufholen. Dann geht es los.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I stay on board all day, writing this blog and enjoying the peace and solitude. It\u2019s still a strange feeling, though, spending time alone in such a confined space. During the night, the gusts may well get even stronger, but by morning it does calm down a bit and I manage to get some more sleep.<\/p>

After breakfast, I get the dinghy ready and head ashore \u2013 Hanna, Livia and J\u00fcrgen are already on their way to Kato Zakros. I\u2019m the first to arrive and treat myself to a lovely cup of espresso at the Akrogiali. When the three of them finally turn up, we sit together for a while before J\u00fcrgen and I set off for the Pepperbird. I\u2019d prepared the boat for sailing earlier that morning, so all we have to do is stow the dinghy and haul in the anchor. Die R\u00fcckfahrt nach Kouremenos verspricht etwas herausfordernder zu werden als es die Hinfahrt war. Mit dem Nordwest-Wind von vier bis f\u00fcnf Bft und B\u00f6en bis sieben m\u00fcssen wir die ganze Strecke hart am Wind segeln. Au\u00dferdem werden wir das letzte St\u00fcck in die Bucht von Kouremenos kreuzen m\u00fcssen.<\/p>

Die Windy-App verspricht als Untermalung Wellenh\u00f6hen von einem Meter und mehr mit einem Abstand von vier Sekunden und weniger. Das wird ein wilder Ritt, der auch wesentlich l\u00e4nger dauern wird als die Fahrt runter nach Zakros.\u00a0Abgesehen von Wind und Wellen verspricht der Tag allerdings herrlich zu werden, sonniger Himmel und moderate Temperaturen vor allem am Wasser – selbst die \u00fcberkommende Gischt hat angenehme 26 \u00b0C.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The return journey to Kouremenos looks set to be a bit more challenging than the outward leg was. With a north-westerly wind of four to five Bft and gusts of up to seven, we\u2019ll have to sail close-hauled for the entire journey. What\u2019s more, we\u2019ll have to tack the final stretch into Kouremenos Bay.<\/p>

As a backdrop the Windy app predicts wave heights of one metre or more, with a period of four seconds or less. It\u2019s going to be a wild ride, and one that will take considerably longer than the trip down to Zakros. Apart from the wind and waves, however, the day looks set to be glorious, with sunny skies and moderate temperatures, especially by the water \u2013 even the spray coming in will be at a pleasant 26 \u00b0C.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
