Morgen kommt unsere Tochter Livia über Bari per Flug und Zug nach San Benedetto und bleibt für eine Woche an Bord. Die etwas über 30 Seemeilen von Civitanova dorthin sollten kein Problem sein.
Sie sind es dann auch nicht.

Tomorrow our daughter Livia will arrive in San Benedetto via Bari by flight and train and stay on board for a week. The 30 nautical miles from Civitanova shouldn’t be a problem.
And they are not.

Über Civitanova muss ich keinen Exkurs verfassen. Es ist ein netter Ort mit einer freundlichen Marina, aber es hat weiter nichts Besonderes. Am ersten Abend waren wir lange auf der Suche nach einem für uns passenden Lokal, aber wir fanden nur Fast-Food-Lokale oder First-Class-Restaurants. Am Ende landeten wir aber in einer netten Osteria und hatten ein exzellentes Abendessen.
Kurios ist jedenfalls der Kirchturm, der zugleich Leuchtturm und Handy-Mast ist. Statt den Kirchenglocken wird über Lautsprecher das „Ave-Maria“ über die Stadt gebimmelt, ein eher seltsames Erlebnis.
Den zweiten Tag verbrachten wir zu einem großen Teil in einem Café, um an diesem Blog zu arbeiten. Und am dritten Tag – nun, da waren wir schon unterwegs nach San Benedetto del Tronto.
I don’t need to write a „digression“ about Civitanova. It’s a nice place with a friendly marina, but there’s nothing special about it. On the first evening, we spent a long time looking for a suitable restaurant, but we only found fast-food places or first-class restaurants. In the end, however, we ended up in a nice Osteria and had an excellent dinner.
In any case, the church tower, which is both a lighthouse and a mobile phone mast, is curious. Instead of the church bells, the ‘Ave Maria’ is rung over the town via loudspeakers, a rather strange experience.
We spent most of the second day in a café working on this blog. And on the third day – well, we were already on our way to San Benedetto del Tronto.
San Benedetto del Tronto
San Benedetto mit knapp 50.000 Einwohnern hat eine lange Geschichte als Fischerdorf. Das ist im Stadtbild auch sehr präsent und es gibt einige Denkmäler, die dieses früher so gefährliche Gewerbe zum Inhalt haben.
Die Innenstadt ist mit großen Jasmin- und Oleanderbüschen geschmückt und einige Palmenalleen vermitteln Urlaubsstimmung – zumindest für uns Mitteleuropäer.
Trotz Bahnstreiks kommt Livia pünktlich an und wir holen sie natürlich vom Bahnhof ab. Am Abend bummeln wir durch die Fußgängerzone der Altstadt und genießen die laue Atmosphäre nach einem sehr heißen Tag.
San Benedetto, with just under 50,000 inhabitants, has a long history as a fishing village. This is also very present in the townscape and there are several monuments to this formerly dangerous trade.
The town centre is adorned with large jasmine and oleander bushes and a few avenues of palm trees create a holiday atmosphere – at least for us Central Europeans.
Despite the train strike, Livia arrives on time and of course we pick her up from the station. In the evening, we stroll through the pedestrianised area of the old town and enjoy the balmy atmosphere after a very hot day.

Noch ein paar Worte zur Segeletappe: Die Reduktion der Tagesstrecken hat uns gutgetan. Auch die Windverhältnisse kommen uns momentan sehr entgegen. Meist haben wir 2 bis 3 Beaufort Wind von achtern. Die Halsen funktionieren jedes Mal besser. Wir wissen nun mit dem Genua-Baum richtig umzugehen: Die Genua muss wegen dem Babystag vor der Halse weggenommen werden, dann halsen wir mit dem Großsegel allein, hängen den Baum um und setzen die Genua wieder auf der anderen Seite. Das dauert ein paar Minuten, aber zahlt sich aus. Bei raumem Wind würden wir ohne Baum gar nicht vom Fleck kommen.
Morgen, Samstag, geht es weiter, wir wollen die circa 80 Seemeilen navch Termoli in zwei Ertappen aufteilen, wobei die erste mit etwa 45 sm nach Ortona die längere sein wird. Der Platz in der Marina ist schon reserviert und wenn wir am Montag nach Termoli weiterfahren können, wird uns Livia am Mittwoch dort wieder verlassen.
A few words about the sailing trip: the reduction in daily distances has done us good. The wind conditions are also very favourable at the moment. We usually have 2 to 3 Beaufort winds from astern. The jibes are working better every time. We now know how to handle the genoa boom properly: The genoa has to be taken away before jibing because of the baby stay, then we jibe with the mainsail alone, hang the boom over and hoist the genoa again on the other side. It takes a few more minutes, but it pays off. We wouldn’t be able to get anywhere without the boom in a broad reach.
Tomorrow, Saturday, we’ll continue, we want to divide the approximately 80 nautical miles to Termoli into two legs, the first of which will be the longer at around 45 nm to Ortona. The berth in the marina has already been reserved and if we can continue to Termoli on Monday, Livia will leave us there again on Wednesday.
