Bis acht Beaufort stark blies heute Nacht der Wind in den Böen, die fast permanent über die Hafenbucht von Kouremenos/Palékastro hinweg pfiffen. Geschlafen haben wir – wie letzte Nacht – nicht viel. Aber der Anker hält bombenfest und die Stimmung unter uns dreien ist nach wie vor gut.

The wind gusted up to force 8 on the Beaufort scale last night, whistling almost constantly across the harbour bay of Kouremenos/Palékastro. We didn’t get much sleep – just like last night. But the anchor is holding rock-solid and the mood among the three of us remains good.

Am Dienstag, 10. März, holen wir Peter vom Flughafen in Heraklion ab und am Mittwoch und Donnerstagvormittag machen wir die Pepperbird seeklar. Die Vorräte sind aufgefüllt und am Donnerstag zu Mittag brechen wir zur ersten Etappe nach Itanos am östlichen Ufer der Sidheros-Halbinsel auf.
Die Fahrt verläuft ruhig, bei drei bis vier Windstärken, wobei wir zunächst auf Am-Wind-Kurs segeln und nach Passieren des Kaps auf einen Raumschotkurs abfallen können. In der Ankerbucht vor der hellenistischen Ausgrabung brauchen wir zwei Ankerversuche, weil wir beim ersten Mal steinigen Grund vorfinden. Dann hält der Anker, aber die umlaufende Dünung verursacht ein unangenehmes Rollen. Das Abendessen allerdings bleibt binnenbords!
On Tuesday, 10 March, we pick up Peter from Herakleion Airport, and on Wednesday and Thursday morning we get the Pepperbird ready for sea. The supplies have been stocked up, and at noon on Thursday we set off on the first leg of our journey to Itanos on the eastern shore of the Sidheros Peninsula.
The journey is calm, with winds of force three to four, and we start by sailing close-hauled before bearing away to a broad reach once we’ve rounded the headland. In the anchorage bay in front of the Hellenistic excavation site, we need two attempts to get the anchor down because we hit rocky ground the first time. Then the anchor holds, but the circling swell causes an unpleasant rolling motion. Dinner, however, stays inboard!

Bei der Sichtung des Wetterberichts nach dem Abendessen sehen wir einige beunruhigende Voraussagen auf uns zukommen. Schon am Wochenende soll eine Starkwind-Front durchziehen mit Böen bis sieben oder acht Beaufort. Nach zwei, drei Tagen relativer Ruhe kommt es dann noch dicker: bis über 40 Knoten Nordwestwind. Das ist ein ausgewachsener Sturm.
Wir beschließen daher, vorerst nicht nach Kassos überzusetzen, sondern an der Ostküste Kretas zu bleiben, nur kurze Strecken zu fahren und von Tag zu Tag zu entscheiden, wie es weitergeht. Nachdem nächste Woche auch Regen angesagt ist, schließen wir auch die Option nicht aus, für ein paar Tage ins Hotel zu ziehen.
Jetzt liegen wir vor dem Hafen Kouremenos, die Nacht war schon recht unruhig, aber der Anker hält bombenfest, nur wagen wir uns mit dem Dinghi (noch) nicht in den Hafen zu fahren, weil wir nicht wissen, ob unser 500 Watt Elektromotor mit den Böen zurechtkommt. Vielleicht können wir zum Abendessen in die Hafen-Cantina auf ein Kebab fahren…
When we check the weather forecast after dinner, we see some worrying predictions ahead. A strong wind front is expected to sweep through as early as this weekend, with gusts of up to seven or eight on the Beaufort scale. After two or three days of relative calm, things are set to get even worse: north-westerly winds of over 40 knots. That’s a full-blown storm.
We therefore decide not to cross over to Kassos for the time being, but to stay on the east coast of Crete, only sailing short distances and deciding day by day how to proceed. As rain is also forecast for next week, we haven’t ruled out the option of moving into a hotel for a few days.
We’re now moored off Kouremenos harbour; the night was quite rough, but the anchor is holding rock-solid. We’re just not daring to take the dinghy into the harbour (yet), as we don’t know if our 500-watt electric motor can cope with the gusts. Perhaps we can pop over to the harbour canteen for a kebab for dinner…

Natürlich sind wir inzwischen nicht ganz untätig an Bord, sondern machen in Itanos einen Ausflug mit dem Dinghi, der wegen der schwierigen Anlegesituation nicht ganz ohne nasse Füße abgegangen ist. Dann spazieren wir durch das Ausgrabungsgelände und, weil noch Zeit bis zum Abend bleibt wandern wir noch hinüber zu den Palmenhainen in der Bucht von Vai.
Am nächsten Tag stehen wir vor der Entscheidung entweder bis nach Kato Zakros zu fahren oder schon nach ein paar Seemeilen zur Bucht von Kouremenos abzubiegen. Weil schon ab Montag der Wind nach Süd drehen könnte und weil dieser Wind in der Bucht von Zakros sehr ungünstig ist, beschließen wir auf Nummer sicher zu gehen und fahren vor dem Wind mit der Genua allein ein kurzes Stück nach Süden. Der Wind ist allerdings schon etwas aufgefrischt, sodass wir sogar 6,1 Knoten erreichen.
Das Ankern ist dann bei den heftigen Böen schon etwas mühsam. Der Grund besteht zwar zum Großteil aus Sand, aber dazwischen liegen immer wieder Felsen und Steinplatten, die zu vermeiden sind. Am besten Schutz bieten die Bucht in der Nähe des kleinen Fischerhafens (der voll ist), aber wir müssen auch Platz für ein- und auslaufende Boote lassen.
Of course, we haven’t been sitting idle on board; in Itanos we went on an excursion in the dinghy, which, due to the tricky mooring situation, didn’t go entirely without getting our feet wet. We then strolled through the archaeological site and, as we still had time before evening, we walked over to the palm groves in Vai Bay.
The next day, we face the decision of either sailing on to Kato Zakros or turning off after just a few nautical miles towards Kouremenos Bay. As the wind could shift to the south as early as Monday, and because this wind is very unfavourable in Zakros Bay, we decide to play it safe and sail a short distance south downwind using the genoa alone. However, the wind has already picked up quite a bit, so we even reach 6.1 knots.
Anchoring is then a bit of a struggle in the strong gusts. Although the seabed consists mainly of sand, there are rocks and slabs of stone scattered throughout that need to be avoided. The best shelter is offered by the bay near the small fishing harbour (which is full), but we also have to leave space for boats coming in and out.

Inzwischen hat sich der Trend beim Wetter bestätigt: nach einer kurzen Pause am Montag und Dienstag wird es ab Mittwoch regnerisch und dann auch stürmisch und kalt. Hier am Meer kühlt es auf 11 bis 12 °C ab, in den Bergen schneit es bis auf 1.300 m herab.
Wir beglückwünschen uns zu der Entscheidung, nicht nach Kassos bzw. Karpathos hinübergefahren zu sein und machen bereits Pläne für die Schlechtwetterphase. Zu tun gibt hier ja genug …
The weather forecast has now been proven reliable: after a brief break on Monday and Tuesday, it will turn rainy from Wednesday onwards, followed by stormy and cold conditions. Here by the sea, temperatures will drop to 11–12 °C, whilst in the mountains snow will fall as low as 1,300 metres.
We’re glad we decided not to drive over to Kassos or Karpathos and are already making plans for the spell of bad weather. There’s certainly plenty to do here…
