Kap Sidheros
Die Entscheidung, Kreta vorerst nicht zu verlassen, war offensichtlich richtig. Morgen ist der letzte ruhige Tag vor einer Schlechtwetterfront, die zunächst mit einem Südostwind startet (bis fast 30 Knoten). Dann folgt ein Tag mit Gewittern und Schauern, die am Freitag in eine Regenfront übergehen, gefolgt von zwei, drei Tagen mit Sturmböen und weiteren Schauern.

The decision not to leave Crete for the time being was clearly the right one. Tomorrow is the last calm day before a bad-weather front arrives, starting with a south-easterly wind (reaching almost 30 knots). This will be followed by a day of thunderstorms and rain, which will turn into a rain front on Friday, followed by two or three days of gusts and further showers.

Die Temperaturen sinken auf knapp über 10° und in den Bergen soll auch wieder Schnee fallen. Wir beschließen, uns ein Apartment zu leisten – jetzt im Spätwinter werden wir was Günstiges finden – und für die zweite Woche von Peters Aufenthalt ein Auto zu mieten.
Aber zunächst müssen wir wieder nach Sitía zurückfahren. Gestern gab es Wind bis über 30 Knoten und wir haben die zwei Tage in Kouremenos an Bord vor Anker verbracht. Heute weht ein moderater bis frischer Nord-West-Wind und wir hoffen, dass wir das Kap Sidheros direkt anliegen können. An der Spitze werden wir einen weiten Bogen um die Klippen und Riffs machen, um auf Backbordbug direkt nach Sitía segeln zu können.
Temperatures are dropping to just over 10°C, and snow is forecast to fall in the mountains again. We decide to treat ourselves to an apartment – we’ll find something affordable now that it’s late winter – and to hire a car for the second week of Peter’s stay.
But first we have to sail back to Sitía. Yesterday the wind was over 30 knots, and we spent the two days in Kouremenos at anchor on board. Today there is a moderate to fresh north-westerly wind, and we hope to be able to head directly for Cape Sidheros. At the tip, we’ll give the cliffs and reefs a wide berth so we can sail directly to Sitía on a port tack.

Das Ablegen vom Ankerplatz bereitet keine Probleme und nach wenigen Minuten sind die Segel voll gesetzt. Hart am Wind kommen wir sowohl von der Halbinsel im Westen als auch von der Insel Elasa im Osten klar. Der Wind ist etwas stärker als vorhergesagt, aber selbst in den Böen hat die Pepperbird keine Schwierigkeiten, den Kurs zu halten.
Die Klippen und Riffe im Nordosten des Kaps sind klar sichtbar, sodass wir auch keine Schwierigkeiten haben, im tiefen Fahrwasser zu bleiben. Wir fahren noch etwas weiter nach Osten, um nach der Wende Seeraum genug zu haben, schließlich liegt später das Kap eine Stunde lang in Lee unseres Kurses.
Leaving the anchorage presents no problems, and within a few minutes the sails are fully set. Sailing close-hauled, we manage to steer clear of both the peninsula to the west and Elasa Island to the east. The wind is slightly stronger than forecast, but even in the gusts the Pepperbird has no trouble holding her course.
The cliffs and reefs to the north-east of the cape are clearly visible, so we have no trouble staying in the deep channel. We head a little further east to ensure we have enough room to manoeuvre after the tack; after all, the cape will lie to leeward of our course for an hour later on.

Wir berechnen den Schlag auf Steuerbordbug so gut, dass wir nach der Wende Sitía direkt anliegen können. Wir fahren zwar weiter hart am Wind, aber es geht sich alles gut aus und wir liegen um 16:30 wieder sicher an unserem alten Liegeplatz.
Das Apartment ist erst am nächsten Tag frei, daher übernachten wir noch einmal an Bord und treffen uns zum Abendessen mit Hanna und Hannu, dem finnischen Paar, dem die Bouboulina gehört. Beim Schlafengehen ruckt die Pepperbird zwar noch heftig an den Leinen, aber später flaut es ab und wir haben einen ruhigen Rest der Nacht.
We calculate the turn to starboard bow so precisely that we can pull right up alongside Sitía after the tack. Although we continue sailing close to the wind, everything works out well and by 16:30 we are safely back at our old mooring.
The apartment isn’t available until the next day, so we spend another night on board after having dinner with Hanna and Hannu, the Finnish couple who own the Bouboulina. As we go to bed, the Pepperbird is still jerking violently on its mooring lines, but later it calms down and we have a peaceful rest of the night.
