Die Westerly Konsort wurde seinerzeit nur gegen Aufpreis mit einer Dusche und Druckwasser ausgestattet und unsere Vorbesitzer haben das nicht gebraucht, weil sie nur 15 Autominuten von der Marina gewohnt haben. Nachdem es im Hafen nicht so schick ist, im Cockpit Körperhygiene zu betreiben, haben wir im Frühjahr eine Notlösung gefunden.
Nun soll eine richtige Dusche her!

Back in the day, the Westerly Konsort was only supplied with a shower and pressurised water as an optional extra, and our previous owners didn’t need it because they lived just a 15-minute drive from the marina. As it’s not exactly ideal to wash up in the cockpit at the harbour, we came up with a makeshift solution in the spring.
Now we’re ready for a proper shower!

Wie immer haben sich auch bei diesem Projekt gute Planung und gründliche Vorbereitung ausgezahlt. Nachdem wir schon im Frühjahr die Vorzüge einer „MacGyver-Dusche“ im Hafen von Sitía genießen konnten, habe ich über den Sommer in Österreich an einer dauerhaften Installation eines „Tröpferlbades“ getüftelt.
Der einzige Platz für einen zusätzlichen kleinen Wassertank an Bord der Pepperbird ist das Fach mit den Seeventilen und es zeigte sich, dass es von Osculati einen passenden gibt: 32 Liter, mehr geht nicht. Der Tank hat allerdings die Wasserpumpe gleich fertig installiert, also musste nur eine zweite Pumpe für das Abwasser und ein passender Duschkopf samt Schlauch mit bestellt werden. Vom online-Segelladen wurden die Sachen direkt zu unserem Freund Yorgos nach Sitía geliefert. Schläuche, Kabel, Montagematerial und alle Anschlüsse hoffte ich vor Ort bei unserem Stamm-Geschäft Chandakis zu finden.
Zur Erwärmung des Duschwassers haben wir uns einen Heizstab für Aquarien besorgt, der mit einer Leistung von 200 W das Wasser auf maximal 40 °C erwärmen kann. Da wir kein Druckwassersystem mit Heiß- und Kaltwasser installieren wollen, ist das die einfachste Methode, um zu einer warmen Dusche zu kommen.
As always, good planning and thorough preparation have paid off with this project too. Having already enjoyed the benefits of a ‘MacGyver shower’ in the harbour at Sitía back in the spring, I spent the summer in Austria tinkering with a permanent ‘Tröpferlbad’ installation (untranslatable Viennese for a public shower-bath).
The only space for an additional small water tank on board the Pepperbird is the compartment housing the seacocks, and it turned out that Osculati had a suitable one: 32 litres – that’s the maximum. However, the tank came with the water pump already fitted, so all we had to do was order a second pump for the waste water and a suitable shower head complete with hose. The items were delivered directly from the online „Segelladen“ to our friend Yorgos in Sitía. I hoped to find hoses, cables, fitting materials and all the necessary connectors locally at our regular shop, Chandakis.
To heat the shower water, we’ve bought an aquarium heating element which, with a power rating of 200 W, can heat the water to a maximum of 40 °C. As we don’t want to install a pressurised water system with hot and cold water, this is the simplest way to have a warm shower.

Wir haben die Arbeiten dann auf drei Tage aufgeteilt. Am ersten Tag wurde der Tank und die Abwasserpumpe montiert. Außerdem haben wir die Kabel vom Elektro-Schrank zu den Seeventilen gezogen, was erstaunlich gut funktioniert hat. Auch die beiden Schläuche für die Dusche und das Abwasser haben wir gleich zu Beginn eingezogen.
Der Tank – der immerhin über dreißig kg schwer sein kann – wurde auf zwei starke Stahlwinkel gestellt, mit einem Klett-Gurt festgezurrt und mit einer der mitgelieferten Metall-Schellen an der Seitenwand gesichert.
We then spread the work over three days. On the first day, we fitted the tank and the waste water pump. We also ran the cables from the electrical cupboard to the seacocks, which worked surprisingly well. We also fitted the two hoses for the shower and the waste water right at the start.
The tank – which can weigh over thirty kg – was placed on two sturdy steel brackets, lashed down with a Velcro strap and secured to the side wall with one of the metal clamps supplied.

Am zweiten Tag haben wir die restlichen Planungsdetails festgelegt: Wo sollte der Schlauch für das Abwasser konkret geführt werden. Sollen wir die Halterung für den Duschkopf einbauen oder nicht? Dann wurde die elektrische Installation vorbereitet und die 230 V-Anschlüsse hergestellt. Unser Inverter hat zwei eingebaute Steckdosen, sodass wir die zweite für das Heizelement verwenden können.
Für die Pumpen mussten zwei Installationsdosen angeschraubt werden, damit die Kabelverbindungen geschützt sind. Es war ein heißer Tag und die Arbeit in den engen Räumlichkeiten war nicht immer einfach, am Ende hat aber alles gut geklappt und wir haben sofort einen improvisierten Test durchgeführt – Die Warmwasserbereitung und das Duschen haben toll funktioniert, die Abwasserpumpe ist noch nicht angeschlossen, also wurde ein letztes Mal mit der Hand geschöpft …
On the second day, we finalised the remaining planning details: exactly where the waste water pipe should run. Should we fit the shower head bracket or not? We then prepared the electrical installation and connected the 230 V sockets. Our inverter has two built-in sockets, so we can use the second one for the heating element.
For the pumps, we had to screw on two junction boxes to protect the cable connections. It was a hot day and working in the confined space wasn’t always easy, but in the end everything went well. In the evening we carried out an impromptu test straight away – the hot water supply and the shower worked brilliantly; the waste water pump isn’t connected yet, so we had to scoop the water out by hand one last time …

Am dritten Tag haben wir schließlich alle Anschlüsse hergestellt und eine Lösung für den Abwasserschlauch gefunden. Die Halterung des Duschkopfes wird nicht eingebaut, weil wir sie nicht mehr brauchen könnten, wenn wir einmal einen anderen Duschkopf haben wollen.
Nach ein paar weiteren Besuchen bei Chandakis, waren schließlich auch die Montageschellen für den Abwasserschlauch an die Kabinenwand geschraubt und nachdem wir eine Ecke aus dem Bodenbrett geschnitten hatten, war auch das Abwasser-Thema erledigt. Ein erster Test hat gezeigt, dass das Abpumpen perfekt funktioniert, die Duschtasse ist danach fast schon trocken.
Noch müssen wir es aus der Duschwanne in einen Plastikkanister pumpen, weil wir kein Seeventil installieren können, solange die Pepperbird im Wasser schwimmt, aber im Winter, wenn sie an Land steht, werden wir unserer Dusche den letzten Schliff geben.
On the third day, we finally completed all the connections and found a solution for the waste water hose. We’re not fitting the shower head bracket, as we might not need it if we ever want to fit a different shower head.
After a few more visits to Chandakis, the mounting clamps for the waste water hose were finally screwed onto the cabin wall and, once we’d cut a corner out of the floorboard, the waste water issue was sorted. An initial test showed that the drainage works perfectly; the shower tray is almost dry afterwards.
For now, we still have to pump the water out of the shower tray into a plastic container, as we can’t fit a sea valve whilst the Pepperbird is afloat, but in winter, when she’s on dry land, we’ll put the finishing touches to our shower.
