Kouremenos 1

Abfahrt

Departure

Unbelievable but true: we left Sitía! Nearly 22 nautical miles further on, we dropped anchor in Kouremenos Bay to visit our friends on the northern east coast. In the process, we lost our anchor…

Agathias im Abendlicht

Agathias in the evening light

We did, however, find him again the day after next …

But first things first: the crossing from Sitía round Cape Sidheros goes smoothly. The unfamiliar motion in a force four wind does make all three of us feel a bit queasy, but as we round the tip of the peninsula, the waves calm down considerably, and we end up enjoying the trip after all.

Auf dem Weg zum Ankerplatz

On the way to the anchorage

We also dropped anchor with Peter in Kouremenos Bay back in March, so we know that it sometimes takes two or three attempts to find a spot with pure sand. On the first attempt, the anchor still scrapes over rocks, so off we go for another try! As I haul in the chain, there’s suddenly almost no resistance at all, and when the end comes on board, the anchor is no longer attached.

Somehow, the shackle between the anchor and the chain must have come loose. Now we need to act fast. The spare anchor is stowed under the foredeck berth – luckily, it’s one with a high holding power too. Whilst Hanna circles round the spacious bay, I gather the anchor and the right shackles and attach the spare anchor to the chain. It only takes a few minutes, then we look for a spot with a sandy seabed and try our luck again – this time the anchor holds and is still doing so.

Am Abend in der Kantina

An evening at the cantina

In the evening, we head to one of our favourite tavernas anyway and enjoy some Cretan barbecue cuisine. The next day, the wind is blowing quite fiercely across the bay and Livia decides to swap life in the confines of a small yacht for a room at the Marina Village Hotel. We would have loved to have her with us, but of course only if she’s enjoying herself too.

The following day, Jürgen, a surfer from the Allgäu, drops by, and together we set out to look for the anchor. After an initial unsuccessful attempt, we tackle the matter systematically. From the GPS track of our journey here, we can work out the position of our first attempt to drop anchor. So the lost hook must be lying somewhere nearby. After a bit of calculating, Jürgen is able to row the dinghy to this spot and mark it with a buoy. As he does so, he notices a metallic glint on the seabed.

Da liegt er ja!

There it is!

Once these preparations are complete, it’s no trouble at all to dive down with a long line and haul the anchor into the dinghy. Now we have two good anchors again and can sleep soundly.

We’ll stay around Palékastro for a few more visits before we probably head on to Kato Zakros on Wednesday. Livia will ‘accompany’ us in a rented car.
